Ringworm is fungal infection of skin, and can exist anywhere on the body. The ringworm fungi feed on keratin, the material found in the outer layer of skin, hair, and nails. These fungi thrive best on skin that is moist, hot, and hidden from the light. When this infection is found on the feet, it is commonly called athlete’s foot; when it is found in the groin it is commonly called jock itch; and when it is found on the body it is still called ringworm.

Ringworm is very common, especially among children, and may be spread by skin-to-skin contact, as well as via contact with contaminated items such as hairbrushes. Ringworm spreads readily, as those infected are contagious even before they show symptoms of the disease. Participants in contact sports such as wrestling have a risk of contracting the fungal infection through skin-to-skin contact.

Ringworm symptoms

The best known sign of ringworm in people is the appearance of one or more red raised itchy patches with defined edges, not unlike the herald rash of Pityriasis rosea. These patches are often lighter in the center, taking on the appearance of a ring. If the infected area involves the scalp or beard area, then bald patches may become evident. The affected area may become itchy for periods of time. If the nails are affected, they may thicken, discolor, and finally crumble and fall off.

Ringworm Treatment

The treatment for ringworm is one of the many effective topical antifungal creams, such as miconazole (Tinactin) or clotrimazole (Lotrimin). Several of these antifungal creams are now available without a prescription. Treatment may require several weeks. Only by treating for at least one week after the resolution of symptoms can one guarantee eradication.

Topical antifungal drugs containing miconazole, clotrimazole, terbinafine, butenafine and tolnaftate, many available without a prescription, are used to clear up the infection. Brand names include Micatin, Tinactin, Monistat, Lotrimin, Bentax, Butop(India) and Lamisil. Generic equivalents may be available.

Treatment may be obstructed by itching, burning, cracking, and scaling that accompany this condition and prevent effective treatment. Ointments may be mixed with hydrocortisone creams such as Cortaid to reduce inflammation and speed recovery. Fungal infections may take a while to clear up, but most ringworm infections should see improvement in a week or two. Types affecting the nails or scalp are very difficult to treat due to fungal infection in follicle roots or under the nail itself.

Ringworm prevention

Fungi thrive in warm, moist areas, such as locker rooms and swimming pools, and in skin folds. The fungi may be present without any symptoms. To prevent ringworm:

• Do not share clothing, sports equipment, towels, or sheets. If you think you have been exposed to ringworm, wash your clothes in hot water with fungus-killing (fungicidal) soap.
• Wear slippers or sandals in locker rooms, showers, and public bathing areas, especially during treatment.
• Shower and shampoo thoroughly after any sport that requires skin-to-skin contact.
• Wrestlers should regularly inspect the skin before practice, use protective bandages over infections while practicing or avoid competition until 1 week after symptoms resolve, and thoroughly disinfect gym pads and equipment.
• Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing. Change your socks and underwear at least once a day.
• Keep your skin clean and dry. Always dry yourself completely after showers or baths.
• If you have athlete’s foot, put your socks on before your underwear so that fungi do not spread from your feet to your groin.
• Take your pet to the vet if it has patches of missing hair, which could be a sign of a fungal infection.
• Continue topical remedies for 2 to 4 weeks after symptoms have resolved.
  • To prevent ringworm from returning after treatment, apply talcum or other drying powder to the affected area daily.
• To prevent ringworm, do not go play on puddles in your backyard that form after a rainstorm.

Measles is a disease caused by a virus. Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus , also known as human herpes virus 3 , one of the eight herpes viruses known to affect humans.

Chickenpox is rarely fatal, with pregnant women and those with a suppressed immune systems being more at risk. Pregnant women not known to be immune and who come into contact with chickenpox may need urgent treatment as the virus can cause serious problems for the baby. This is less of an issue after 20 weeks.
Later in life, viruses remaining dormant in the nerves can reactivate causing localised eruptions of shingles.

Chickenpox Symptoms

Flat, red spots that become raised and look like small pimples. These develop into small blisters that break and crus over. Touching the fluid from a chickenpox blister can also spread the disease. A person with chickenpox is contagious from one to two days before the rash appears until all blisters have formed scabs. This may take five to 10 days.It takes from 10-21 days after contact with an infected person for someone to develop chickenpox.

• Selenium sulfide shampoo may reduce the risk of spreading the infection early in the course of therapy by reducing the number of viable spores that are shed.
• Oral steroids may help reduce the risk for and extent of permanent alopecia in the treatment of kerion.
• Shampoo containing povidone-iodine has been shown to be more effective in producing negative cultures than shampoos containing econazole and selenium sulfide and than Johnson’s Baby Shampoo.
• Classrooms and playmates have contact with tinea capitis patients by sharing toys or personel objects including combs and hairbrushes with young children. These individuals need to be evaluated for the presence of infection.

Tinea versicolor is a common skin infection caused by the yeast Malassezia furfur .This yeast is normally found on the human skin and only becomes troublesome under certain circumstances, such as a warm and humid environment.

Tinea versicolor symptoms

• Generally oval or irregularly-shaped spots of 1/4 to 1 inch in diameter, often merging together to form a larger patch.
• Occasional fine scaling of the skin producing a very superficial ash-like scale.
• Pale, dark tan, or pink in color, with a reddish undertone that can darken when the patient is overheated, such as in a hot shower or during/after exercise.

Tinea versicolor treatment

• Oral antifungal prescription only medications include 400 mg of ketoconazole or fluconazole in a single dose, or ketoconazole 200 mg daily for 7 days, or itraconazole 400 mg daily for 3-7 days. The single-dose regimens can be made more effective by having the patient exercise 1-2 hours after the dose, to induce sweating. The sweat is allowed to evaporate, and showering is delayed for a day, leaving a film of the medication on the skin.
• Recurrence is common and may be reduced by intermittent application of topical agents (such as tea tree oil) or adding a small amount of anti-dandruff shampoo to water used for bathing.

Blanpharitis causes

• Posterior blepharitis affects the back of the eyelids, the part that makes contact with the eyes. This is caused by the oil glands present in this region. It is by far, the most common type of blepharitis.
• Anterior blepharitis affects the front of the eyelids near the eyelashes. The causes are seborrheic dermatitis, and occasional infection by Staphylococcus bacteria.

Blenpharitis Treatment.

• Seborrheic blepharitis, the most common type of blepharitis, is usually one part of the spectrum of seborrheic dermatitis seborrhea which involves the scalp, lashes, eyebrows, nasolabial folds and ears. Treatment is best accomplished by a dermatologist.
• Staphlycoccal blepharitis is a type of external eye inflammation. As with dandruff, it is usually asymptomatic until the disease progresses. As it progresses, the sufferer begins to notice a foreign body sensation, matting of the lashes, and burning. Usually, the primary care physician will prescribe topical antibiotics for staphylococcal blepharitis. Unfortunately this is not an effective treatement.

The single most important treatment principle is a daily routine of lid margin hygiene as described below. Such a routine needs to be convenient enough to be continued lifelong to avoid relapses as blepharitis is a lifelong condition.

A typical lid margin hygiene routine consists of 3 steps:

1. Softening of lid margin debris and oils: Apply a warm wet compress to the lids - such as a washcloth with hot water - for about 2 minutes.
2. Mechanical removal of lid margin debris: At end of shower routine, wash your face with a wash cloth. Use facial soap or non-burning baby shampoo (make sure to dilute the soap solution 1/10 with water first). Gently and repeatedly rub along the lid margins while eyes are closed.
3. Antibiotic reduction of lid margin bacteria (at the discretion of your physician):
   After lid margin cleaning, spread small amount of prescription antibiotic ophthalmic ointment with finger tip along lid fissure while eyes closed. Use prior to bed time as opposed to in the morning to avoid blurry vision.

The following guide is very common but is more challenging to perform by visually disabled or frail patients as it requires good motor skills and a mirror.

1. Apply hot compresses to both eyes for 5 minutes once to twice per day.
2. After hot compresses, in front of a mirror, use a moist Q-tip soaked in a cup of water with a drop of baby shampoo. Rub along the lid margins while tilting the lid outward with the other hand.
3. In front of mirror, place small drop of antibiotic ophthalmic ointment (e.g. erythromycin) in lower conjunctival sack while pulling lid away from eye with other hand.

If acne rosacea coexists, treatment should be focused on this skin disorder as the underlying cause together with the above lid margin hygiene routine. Typically, 100 mg doxycycline by mouth twice per day is prescribed for four to six weeks which can be tapered to 50 mg once daily for several years.

If ergosterol synthesis is completely or partially inhibited, the cell is no longer able to construct an intact cell membrane. This leads to death of the fungus.

If the skin inflammation causes discomfort and itching, glucocorticoid steroids may be combined with the anti-fungal drug to help prevent further irritation due to the patient scratching the area. Apart from the quicker relief of symptoms, this also helps minimise the risk of secondary bacterial infection caused by the scratching. However steroids, if used alone, for fungal infections may exacerbate the condition.

• In females, acne can be improved with hormonal treatments. The common combined oestrogen/progestogen methods of hormonal contraception have some effect, but the anti-testosterone, Cyproterone, in combination with an oestrogen is particularly effective at reducing androgenic hormone levels.
• A group of medications for this are topical retinoids such as tretinoin (brand name Retin-A), adapalene (brand name Differin) and tazarotene (brand name Tazorac). Like isotretinoin, they are related to vitamin A, but they are administered as topicals and generally have much milder side effects.

Atopic dermatitis often occurs together with other atopic diseases like hay fever, asthma and conjunctivitis. It is a familial and chronic disease and its symptoms can increase or disappear over time. Atopic dermatitis in older children and adults is often confused with psoriasis. Atopic dermatitis afflicts humans, particularly young children; it is also a well-characterized disease in domestic dogs.

Although there is no cure for atopic eczema, and its causes not well understood, it can be treated very effectively through a combination of prevention and drug therapy.

Atopic dermatitis causes

Causes by allergy: Although it is an inherited disease, Eczema is primarily aggravated by contact with or intake of allergens. It can also be influenced by other “hidden” factors such as stress or fatigue. Atopic Eczema consists of chronic inflammation; it occurs in people with a history of allergy disorders such as asthma or hay fever.

Causes by biological: Although it is such a common disease, relatively little is understood about the underlying causes of Atopic Eczema. While AE is associated with allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis, the connection between the diseases has not been established. Twin studies have consistently shown that the disease has a higher rate of concordance in identical as compared to fraternal twins, which also indicates that genetics plays a role in its development. However, the rate of concordance between identical twins is far from 100%, and the changing frequency of the disease over time points to the environmental factors—nutrition or hygiene, for instance—that also play a role in disease susceptibility.

Atopic dermatitis treatment

Since atopic dermatitis often accords to a fungal candida infection, patients are recommended to do a fungal test first. If there´s a candida infection with dermatitis patients, they might be cured from atopic dermatitis almost completely after several weeks by taking anti-fungal medicine like amphotericin B or nystatin .

The primary treatment involves prevention, which includes avoiding or minimizing contact with (or intake of) known allergens. Once that has been established, topical treatments can be used. Topical treatments focus on reducing both the dryness and inflammation of the skin.

To combat the severe dryness associated with eczema, a high-quality, dermatologist approved moisturizer should be used daily. Moisturizers should not have any ingredients that may further aggravate the condition. Moisturizers are especially effective if applied within 5-10 minutes after bathing.

Most commerical soaps wash away the oils produced by the skin that normally serve to prevent drying. Using a soap substitute such as aqueous cream helps keep the skin moisturized. A non-soap soap can be purchased usually at a local drug store. Showers should be kept short and at a lukewarm/moderate temperature.

If moisturizers on their own don’t help and the eczema is severe, a doctor may prescribe topical steroid ointments or creams. Steroid creams have been traditionally been considered the most effective method of treating severe eczema. Disadvantages of using steroid creams include stretch marks and thinning of the skin. Higher-potency steroid creams must not be used on the face or other areas where the skin is naturally thin; usually a lower-potency steroid is prescribed for sensitive areas. Along with creams, antibiotics are often prescribed if an infection is suspected. If the eczema is especially severe, a doctor may prescribe prednisone or administer a shot of cortisone. If the eczema is mild, over-the-counter hydrocortisone can be purchased at the local drugstore.

• Cover the corn with a protective, non medicated pad or bandage which you can buy at drug stores.
• If the outer layers of a corn have peeled away, apply a nonprescription liquid of 5 to 10% salicylic acid. Gently rub the corn off with cotton gauze.
• Ask a shoe repair person to sew a metatarsal bar onto your shoe to use when a corn is healing.

For calluses prevention

• Do not try to cut a callus off.
• Soak your feet in warm water to soften the callus. Pat it try.
• Rub the calluses with protective pads. You can get these at drug stores.
• Do not wear poorly fitting shoes or other sources of fiction that may lead to calluses.
• Wear gloves for a hobby or work that puts or work that puts pressure on your hands.
• Wear knee pads for activities that put pressure on your knees.

Shingles Symptoms

• Pain, itching, or a tingling feeling before a rash appears.
• A rash of painful red blisters. These later crust over. Most often, the rash appears on one side of your body or face.
• Fever and general weakness can occur.

• Medicines for pain. This will includes over counter medicine pain relievers and capsaicin topical cream. Prescribed medicine may be helpful for PHN

Shingle Prevention

• Do not wear clothing that irritates the skin area where sore are present.
• Keep sore open to the air. Until the blisters are completely crusted over, do not go near children or adults who have not yet had chicken pox. Do not go near persons who have a condition which weakens their immune system. Examples are cancer, HIV/AIDS, and chronic illnesses. They could get chicken Pox form shingles.
• Wash blisters. Do not scrub them.
• To relieve itching. Apply calamine lotion to the effected area. You can also use paste make of 3 teaspoons of baking soda mixed with 1 teaspoon of water.
• Avoid drafty area.
• Put a cool compress, such as a cold cloth dipped in ice water, on the blisters. Do this for 20 minutes at the time.
• Drink lots of liquids.

Head

• One method of hiding hair loss is the “comb over”, which involves restyling the remaining hair to cover the balding area. It is usually a temporary solution, useful only while the area of hair loss is small. As the hair loss increases, a comb over becomes less effective. When this reaches a stage of extreme effort with little effect it can make the person the object of teasing or scorn.
• Another method is to wear a hat or a hairpiece — a wig or toupee. The wig is a layer of artificial or natural hair made to resemble a typical hair style. In most cases the hair is artificial. Wigs vary widely in quality and cost. In the United States, the best wigs — those that look like real hair — cost up to tens of thousands of dollars. Organizations such as Wigs for Kids and Locks of Love collect individuals’ donations of their own natural hair to be made into wigs for young cancer patients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy or other cancer treatment in addition to any type of hair loss.

Eyebrows

• Though not as common as the loss of hair on the head, chemotherapy, hormone imbalance, forms of alopecia, and other factors can also cause loss of hair in the eyebrows. Artificial eyebrows are available to replace missing eyebrows or to cover patchy eyebrows.

Embracing baldness

• Of course, instead of concealing hair loss, one may embrace it. A shaved head will grow stubble in the same manner and at the same rate as a shaved face. Many celebrities and athletes shave their heads. The general public has become accepting of the shaved head also.
• Female baldness is less socially accepted.

Baldness folklore

There are many myths regarding the possible causes of baldness and its relationship with one’s virility, intelligence, ethnicity, job, social class, wealth etc. While skepticism is warranted due to lack of scientific validation, some of these myths may have a degree of underlying truth.

• “You inherit baldness from your mother’s father.”

Previously, early baldness of the androgenic type was thought to be sex linked dominant in males and to be sex linked recessive in females.

Research suggests that the gene for the androgen receptor, which is significant in determining probability for hair loss, is located on the X chromosome and so is always inherited from the mother’s side.There is a 50% chance that a person shares the same X chromosome as their maternal grandfather. Because women have two X chromosomes, they will have two copies of the androgen receptor gene while men only have one. However research has also shown that a person with a balding father also has a significantly greater chance of experiencing hair loss.

Another model for the inheritance of baldness is “Autosomal dominant with mixed pentrance. That is, you can get it from either parent and it presents variably.

• “Intellectual activity or psychological problems can cause baldness.”

This notion may be due to the fact that cholesterol is involved in the process of neurogenesis and also the base material from which the body ultimately manufactures DHT. While the notion that bald men are more intelligent may lack credibility in the modern world, in the ancient world if a person was bald it was likely that he had an adequate amount of fat in his diet. Thus, his mental development was probably not stunted by malnutrition during his crucial formative years, he was more likely to be wealthy, and also have had access to a formal education. However a sedentary lifestyle is less likely to correlate with intelligence in the modern world, and dietary fat content is not linked to economic class in modern developed countries. Of course, aside from all these scientific reasons, baldness could be linked to intellect or wisdom simply due to the fact that people go bald as they age and become more experienced.

This is sometimes used as a stereotype in films, where the more intellectual or rather frustrated characters are most usually portrayed as bald and generally unattractive, as opposed to the main characters which are usually portrayed as attractive, fit, mentally stable and generally with no apparent hair problems.

This same myth normally extends to considering people having intellectual jobs more prone to baldness problems compared to manual laborers, sometimes further extending the myth to male college or university students when compared to workers of the same age. The myth is suspect because counterexamples can be found in any case.

There is evidence, confirmed by cross cultural studies, for an association between androgen levels and intellectual ability. These findings are controversial due to their implications regarding psychology and gender.

Total testosterone exhibits a positive relation to tactual-spatial abilities and to the degree of lateralization. Total testosterone is negatively correlated with verbal fluency. Testosterone in the saliva is also significantly positively correlated to tactual-spatial test scores and, in addition, to field independence. DHT and the ratio DHT/total testosterone are positively related to verbal fluency and negatively to the degree of lateralization of tactual-spatial performance.

• “One’s ethnicity can increase the chances of going bald.”

This idea has been seen as somewhat descriminative and sensitive in nature, however studies have shown that men of Greek or Macedonian heritage have the highest percentage of bald or balding men. (age group 16-28, typical, non married, non-drug using, males) Studies done between 6 countries in Western Europe, incl. Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Ireland and 4 countries in Eastern Europe including Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Romania show that Greek men of the same age group and study period had the highest percentage of full crown baldness or Alopeciae totalis (front, top and back) Another typical study during the same period showed that Greek men, 1700 out of 2457 total studied males also suffered the highest amount of random alopecia areata among men (aged 16-28, typical, non-drug using males)

• “Baldness can be caused by emotional stress, sexual frustration etc.”

Emotional stress has been shown to accelerate baldness in genetically susceptible individuals.
Stress due to sleep deprivation in military recruits lowered testosterone levels, but is not noted to have effected SHBG.

Thus, stress due to sleep deprivation in fit males is unlikely to elevate DHT, which causes male pattern baldness. Whether it can cause hair loss by some other mechanism is not clear.

• “Bald men are more ‘virile’ or sexually active than others.”

Levels of free testosterone are strongly linked to libido and also DHT levels, but unless free testosterone is virtually non-existent levels have not been shown to affect virility. Men with androgenic alopecia are more likely to have a higher baseline of free androgens. However sexual activity is multifactoral, and androgenic profile is also not the only determining factor in baldness. Additionally, because hair loss is progressive and free testosterone declines with age, a person’s hairline may be more indicative of their past than present disposition.

• “Shaving hair makes it grow back stronger”

Proposed as a popular remedy against baldness, it is very probably just an illusion similar to the one perceived after shaving one’s beard or mustache. Shaving one’s head doesn’t increase the number of healthy hair present on the scalp, and, after the remaining hair has grown a few millimeters, no enhancement in thickness or overall quality can be observed.

• “Frequent ejaculation causes baldness”

There are many misconceptions about what can help prevent hairloss, one of these being that frequent ejaculation may have an influence on MPB. Depending on frequency, it can raise or lower plasma testosterone. The claim that frequent ejaculations can cause baldness is often viewed with skepticism.

• “Standing on one’s head alleviates baldness”

The “blood-flow” theory, which led men to stand on their heads in the 1980s, can be found in the advertising for many of the fake hairloss treatments for sale on the internet. While Minoxidil is a vasodilator and is speculated to work, in part, by increasing blood flow to hair follicles, there is no evidence that standing on one’s head can alleviate baldness.

• “Tight hats cause baldness.”

While this may be a myth, hats do cause hair breakage and, to a lesser degree, split ends. Since hats are not washed as frequently as other clothing, they can also lead to scalp uncleanliness and possible Pityrosporum ovale contamination in men with naturally oily scalps.

Treatments for the various forms alopecia have limited success, but typical male pattern baldness is now a very preventable, and reversible (to a certain extent) condition. Some hair loss sufferers make use of clinically proven treatments such as finasteride and topically applied minoxidil (in solution) in an attempt to prevent further loss and regrow hair. As a general rule, it is easier to maintain remaining hair than it is to regrow; however, the treatments mentioned will help the vast majority of users suffering from Androgenetic alopecia, and there are new technologies in cosmetic transplant surgery and hair replacement systems that can be completely undetectable.

Preventing and reversing hair loss

In the USA, there are only 2 drug-based treatments that have been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and one product that has been cleared by the FDA for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, otherwise known as male or female pattern hair loss. The two FDA approved treatments are finasteride (marketed for hair loss as Propecia) and minoxidil

Finasteride

• A pharmaceutical company reportedly sought to find the smallest effective quantity of finasteride and test its long-term effects on 1,553 men between ages 18 and 41 with mild to moderate thinning hair. Based on their research, 1mg daily was selected, and after 2 years of daily treatment, over 83% of the 1,553 men experiencing male hair loss had actually maintained or increased their hair count from baseline. Visual assessments concluded that over 80% had improved appearances.

Minoxidil

• Minoxidil was first used in tablet form as a medicine to treat high blood pressure, but it was noticed that some patients being treated with Minoxidil experienced excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis) as a side-effect. Further research showed that by applying Minoxidil in solution form directly to the scalp, it could prove to be beneficial to those experiencing topical hair loss.
• FDA clinical trials showed that 65% of men with androgenetic alopecia maintained or increased their hair count from the use of minoxidil 5% in liquid form. 54% of these men experienced moderate to dense regrowth and 46% experienced hair loss stabilisation and mild regrowth.
• In controlled clinical studies of women aged 18-45, 2 out of 3 women with moderate degrees of hereditary hair loss reported re-growth after using 2% minoxidil. Initial results occur at 4 months with maximum results occurring at 8 months.

Low-level laser therapy

• A low level laser is shone directly on the scalp to stimulate hair growth through “Photo-Biostimulation” of the hair follicles. One product of these low level laser therapies is the “Hairmax Lasercomb”. There is no peer-reviewed evidence to support this claim. There is some debate over the FDA’s acknowledgment of the Lasercomb, but it has been accepted by the FDA as effective in the submitted claims. [8] The Lasercomb was cleared by the FDA as being Substantially Equivalent (SE) to predicate devices legally marketed before May 28, 1978. This clearance is not the same as approval because it only applies to the lasercomb and not to any other similar laser based hair devices. The devices that the lasercomb proved itself equivalent to were a variety of FDA approved laser based/non hair growth devices intended for hair removal and pain relief, and 2 non FDA approved non laser based/hair growth devices such as the Raydo & Wonder Brush and the Vacuum Cap. These last two devices were sold in the early 1900’s and are well established as medical quackery, but they were legal to market at the time which does satisfy the FDA’s 510k SE criterea. The 510k number for the Lasercomb is K060305. The Leimo laser was recently approved by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) of Australia as a Class IIa Medical Device that regrows hair. Its ARTG number is 139 456.

Surgery

• Surgery is another method of reversing hair loss and baldness, although it may be considered an extreme measure. The surgical methods used include hair transplantation, whereby hair-producing follicles are taken from the back and sides of the head and injected into bald or thinning areas.

Hair multiplication

• Looking forward, the prospective treatment of hair multiplication/hair cloning, which extracts self-replenishing follicle stem cells, multiplies them many times over in the lab, and microinjects them into the scalp, has been shown to work in mice, and is currently under development, expected by some scientists to be available to the public in 2009–2015. Subsequent versions of the treatment are expected by some scientists to be able to cause these follicle stem cells to simply signal the surrounding hair follicles to rejuvenate.
• In October 2006, UK biotechnology firm Intercytex announced they have successfully tested a method of removing hair follicles from the back of the neck, multiplying them and then reimplanting the cells into the scalp (Hair multiplication). The initial testing resulted in 70% of male patients regrowing hair. This treatment method is expected to be available to the public by 2009.
• In January 2007, Italian stem-cell researchers say they’ve come up with a new technique for curing baldness. Pierluigi Santi of a Genoa clinic said stem cells could be used to “multiply” hair roots. He said the clinic would be ready to perform its first hair transplants on priority patients - those who have lost their hair in fires or other accidents - within a few months. After that, he said, “we’ll open our doors to paying customers”. Santi’s approach works by splitting roots and growing new follicles.

Ketoconazole

• Topical application of ketoconazole, which is both an anti-fungal and a potent 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, is often used as a supplement to other approaches.

Unsaturated fatty acids

• Particular unsaturated fatty acids such as gamma linolenic acid are 5 alpha reductase inhibitors if taken internally.

Placebos

• Interestingly, placebo treatments in studies often have reasonable success rates, though not as high as the products being tested, and even similar side-effects as the products. For example, in Finasteride (Propecia) studies, the percent of patients with any drug-related sexual adverse experience was 3.8% compared with 2.0% in the placebo group.

Exercise

• Regular aerobic exercise can help keep androgen levels (particularly free testosterone levels) naturally lower while maintaining overall health, lowering stress and increasing SHBG.
• Weight training without aerobic exercise may increase testosterone.One study suggests that both heavy exercise and increased fat intake, in combination, are required for increased free testosterone in strength trainers. Increased total or free testosterone would help them build and repair muscle, but may cause susceptible individuals to lose hair.
• However, there is at least one study that indicates a decline in free testosterone combined with an increase in strength due to an (unspecified) strength training regime. Stress reduction

Stress reduction

• Can be helpful in slowing hair loss.

Immunosuppressants

• Immunosuppressants applied to the scalp have been shown to temporarily reverse alopecia areata, though the side effects of some of these drugs make such therapy questionable.

Saw palmetto

• Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) is an herbal DHT inhibitor often claimed to be cheaper and have fewer side effects than finasteride and dutasteride. Unlike other 5alpha-reductase inhibitors, Serenoa repens induces its effects without interfering with the cellular capacity to secrete PSA. Saw palmetto extract has been demonstrated to inhibit both isoforms of 5-alpha-reductase unlike finasteride which only inhibits the (predominant) type 2 isoenzyme of 5-alpha-reductase.

Polygonum multiflorum

• Polygonum Multiflorum is a traditional Chinese cure for hair loss. P. multiflorum contains stilbene glycosides similar to resveratrol.

Beta sitosterol

• Beta sitosterol, which is a constituent in many seed oils, can help to treat BHP by lowering cholesterol. If used for this purpose, an extract is best. Consuming large amounts of oil to get at small quantities of beta sitosterol is likely to exacerbate male pattern baldness.

Anti-androgens

• While drastic, broad spectrum anti-androgens such as flutamide are sometimes used topically. Flutamide is potent enough to have a feminizing effect in men, including growth of the breasts.

Hedgehog agonists

• Through 2006, a drug development company spent $1,000,000 on a hair growth program focused on the potential development of a topical hedgehog agonist for hair growth disorders, such as male pattern baldness and female hair loss. The hairloss research program was shut down in May 2007 because the process did not meet the proper safety standards.
• In May 2007, US company Follica Inc, announced they have licensed technology from the University of Pennsylvania which can regenerate hair follicles by reawakening genes which were once active only in the embryo stage of human development

Types of Angioma:

Cherry Angioma

• Cherry angioma is the most common kind of angioma. It is also called a Senile angioma or Campbell de Morgan spot, after the nineteenth century British surgeon Campbell De Morgan who first noted and described them.
• These are made up of clusters of tiny capillaries at the surface of the skin, and range in color from bright red to purple. When they first develop, they may only be a few millimeters across, but sometimes grow to a centimeter or more in diameter. As they grow larger, they tend to expand in thickness, and may take on the raised and rounded shape of a dome. Because the blood vessels comprising the angioma are so close to the skin’s surface, cherry angiomas may bleed profusely if they are injured.

Cherry Angioma treatment

• On the rare occasions that they require removal, tradionally cryosurgery or electrosurgery has been used. More recently laser treatment has also been used.

Spinder Angioma

• A spider angioma ( nevus araneus, spider nevus, or vascular spider) is a type of angioma found slightly below the skin’s surface, often containing a central red spot and reddish extensions which radiate outwards like a spider’s web. They are common and benign, present in around 10-15% of healthy adults and young children.
• Spider angiomas are commonly found on the face, neck, upper part of the trunk and arms. They may also be present on the backs of the hands and fingers in young children. Most, however, are a result of liver disease.
• Many pregnant women, or women using hormonal contraception, have spider angiomas. People who have significant hepatic disease also show many spider angiomas, as they are not making sufficient of coagulation factors. About 33% of patients with cirrhosis have spider angiomas. As such, microhemorrhages may be observed as spider angiomas.

Spider Angioma Treatment

• Spider angiomas are asymptomatic and usually resolve spontaneously. This is common in the case of children, although they may take several years to disappear. If the spider angiomas are associated with pregnancy, they may resolve after childbirth. In women taking oral contraceptives, they may resolve after stopping these contraceptives. The spider angiomas associated with liver disease may resolve when liver function increases or when a liver transplant is performed.
• For spider angiomas on the face, techniques such as electrodesiccation and laser treatment can be used to remove the lesion. There is a small risk of a scar, although the results are generally good. Spider angiomas can recur after treatment.

Canker Causes

• The exact cause of aphthous ulcers is unknown. Factors that provoke them include stress, fatigue, illness, injury from accidental biting, hormonal changes, menstruation, sudden weight loss, food allergies, the foaming agent in toothpaste (SLS), and deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid. Some drugs, such as nicorandil, also have been linked with mouth ulcers. In some cases they are thought to be caused by an overreaction by the body’s own immune system.
• Trauma to the mouth is the most common trigger of aphthous ulcers. Physical trauma, such as that caused by toothbrush abrasions, laceration with sharp foods or objects, accidental biting (particularly common with sharp canine teeth), or dental braces can cause mouth ulcers by breaking the mucous membrane. Other factors, such as chemical irritants or thermal injury, may also lead to the development of ulcers. The large majority of toothpastes sold in the U.S. contain Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is known to cause aphthous ulcers in certain individuals. Using a toothpaste without SLS will reduce the frequency of aphthous ulcers in persons who experience aphthous ulcers caused by SLS. However, some studies find no connection between SLS in toothpaste and mouth ulcers.
• Artificial sugars, such as those found in diet cola and sugarless gum, have been reported as causes of aphthous ulcers as well. They can also be linked to an increased intake of acids such as ascorbic acid (one form of Vitamin C) or citric acid. In this case the sores disappear after intake decreases (for example, by substituting ascorbate salts for ascorbic acid).
  Another possible cause of aphthous ulcers may be opportunistic activity by combinations of otherwise normal bacterial flora, such as aerobic streptococci, Neisseria, Actinomyces, spirochetes, and bacteroides. According to small-scale experiments by one patent applicant Hau , topical preparations of high doses of penicillin resulted in accelerated healing of mouth ulcers.
• There is a commonly held belief that another cause of aphthous ulcers is gluten intolerance (Coeliac disease), whereby consumption of wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats can result in chronic mouth ulcers. However, two small studies of patients with Coeliac disease have demonstrated no link between the disease and aphthous ulcers. If patients with aphthous ulcers do happen to have gluten intolerance, they may experience benefit in eliminating breads, pastas, cakes, pies, scones, biscuits, beers and so on from their diet and substituting gluten-free varieties where available.
• Although the exact cause is not known, aphthous ulcers are thought to form when the body becomes aware of and attacks molecules which it does not recognize.The presence of the unrecognized molecules garners a reaction by the T-cells, which trigger a reaction that causes the damage of a mouth ulcer. People who get these ulcers have lower numbers of regulatory T-cells.
• Repeat episodes of aphthous ulcers can be indicative of an immunodeficiency, signalling low levels of immunoglobulin in the mucous membrane of the mouth Certain types of chemotherapy cause mouth ulcers as a side effect. Canker Prevention

• Regular use of mouthwash may help prevent or reduce the frequency of sores.
• In some cases, switching toothpastes can prevent mouth ulcers from occurring with research looking at the role of sodium dodecyl sulfate (sometimes called sodium lauryl sulfate, or simply SLS), a detergent found in most toothpastes. Using toothpaste free of this compound has been found in several studies to help reduce the amount, size and recurrence of ulcers.
• Dental braces are a common physical trauma that can lead to mouth ulcers and can be treated with wax to reduce abrasion of the mucosa. Avoidance of other types of physical and chemical trauma will prevent some ulcers, but since such trauma is usually accidental, this type of prevention is not usually practical.

• Aphthous ulcers normally heal without treatment within 1 to 2 weeks. Good oral hygiene should be maintained, and spicy, acidic, and salty foods and drinks are best avoided, as they may irritate existing ulcers. Strong mouthwash such as Listerine has also been known to cause irritation because of its strong ingredients, and many oral care professionals discourage the use of it while having a mouth ulcer.
• Pain can be treated with several pain-relieving gels, such as Anbesol, Bonjela, Campho-Phenique, Orabase B, Zilactin, or Kanka, available in drugstores. Some people claim that such gels also accelerate the healing of their ulcers.
• A dental laser can be used to treat an aphthous ulcer. Immediate and lasting pain relief is achieved, and the ulcer will heal in a few days.
  Another purported remedy is the use of the prescription steroid Dexaltin Oral Paste. Triamcinolone Acetonide dental paste can be very effective; the steroid reduces the immune system’s response in the area of the ulcer. It is available by prescription only.
• A recent study of the Oral-B product Amosan suggests that it may reduce anaerobic bacteria, such as those found in oral wounds. The study did not, however, demonstrate the efficacy of the product in treating mouth ulcers.
• Tincture of benzoin can be used as a protectant for recurring aphthous ulcers, by forming a layer over the sore and protecting it from further irritation.
• Debacterol is available for individual use. This on being applied directly to the wound cauterizes the ulcer and instantly provides permanent pain relief.
• The timing of treatment can be critical for a significant reduction of the length of time of the pain caused by the ulcer. If repeated antiseptic mouthwash treatments are applied as early as possible, preferably within 12 hours of the initial symptoms, i.e., the onset of tingling or burning sensations, then the subsequent intense pain will only last 1–2 days, instead of the usual 7-10 days Although the ulcer will continue its normal course of healing within 7-10 days, early treatment limits the pain to just the first cou of days.
• Since this type of ulcer is highly recurrent, people suffering from it can usually recognize the telltale signs of another imminent onset, and therefore the chance of reducing or even eliminating the pain associated is good if treated early. Unfortunately, if treatment is delayed until 24 hours after the start of intense pain, only temporary relief of up to several hours can be achieved per treatment.

Home remedies

Some home remedies that have been suggested include:

• Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza) may help heal canker sores if the medicated disks are applied early on
• Antacid techniques suggested include the following:
• Make a paste of baking soda and water; apply directly to the ulcers
• Make a mix of half milk of magnesia and half Benadryl, and hold in the mouth for up to 3 minutes.

Canker Sore Treatment for severe cases

• Treatments based on antibiotics and steroids such as Dexamethasone Elixir are reserved for severe cases, and should be used only under medical supervision. Tetracycline suspension is an antibiotic commonly prescribed for mouth ulcers. Some doctors may also prescribe a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, for cases of multiple or severe aphthous ulcers. If it does not heal within a week, a doctor or dentist may cauterize it using a laser to burn off the ulcer, causing it to completely disappear within a few hours or two to three days.
• In very severe cases, a doctor may prescribe a steroid treatment. One such steroid is methylprednisolone (usually in a dose-pack), taken orally for a period of 7 days. Alternatively, the doctor may inject a steroid directly into the site of the ulcer (this treatment is performed with kenalog. Between 0.2 and 0.4 ml of kenalog is injected into the site of the ulcer, which will usually be completely healed 72 to 96 hours after the injection).
• Patients in whom ulcers do not respond to local treatment may benefit from a short course of pulsed prednisone.
• Some dentists recommend a sulfuric acid solution for treating mouth ulcers, such as debacterol.

Actinic Keratosis Prevention

Preventative measures recommended for Actinic Keratosis are similar to those for skin cancer:

• Not staying in the sun for long periods of time without protection (e.g.:sunscreen, clothing, hats).
• Frequently applying powerful sunscreens with SPF ratings greater than 15 and that also block both UVA and UVB light.
• Using sunscreen even in winter sun exposure.
• Wearing sun protective clothing such as hats, long-sleeved shirts, long skirts, or pants.
• Avoiding sun exposure during noon hours is very helpful because ultraviolet light is the most powerful at that time.

Actinic Keratosis Diagnosis

• Doctors can usually identify Actinic Keratosis by doing a thorough examination. A biopsy may be necessary when the keratosis is large and/or thick, to make sure that the bump is a keratosis and not a skin cancer. Seborrheic keratoses are other bumps that appear in groups like the actinic keratosis but are not caused by sun exposure, and are not related to skin cancers. Seborrheic keratoses may be mistaken for an actinic keratosis.

Actinic Keratosis Treatment

Various modalities are employed in the treatment of actinic keratosis:

Poison ivy is a plant in the family Anacardiaceae. The name is sometimes spelled “Poison-ivy” to indicate with the hyphen that the plant is not a true Ivy or Hedera.

Poison Ivy signs and symptoms

• It is a woody vine that is well known for its ability to produce oil urushiol, a skin irritant that causes an itching rash for most people, technically known as urushiol-induced contact dermatitis which is contained in various plants, including the plants of the genus Toxicodendron (including poison ivy, poison oak, and poison Sumac), as well as other plants in the family Anacardiaceae (mango, Rengas tree, Burmese lacquer tree, India marking nut tree, and the shell of the cashew nut), and even unrelated plants such as Ginkgo biloba.
• Symptoms of the rash include itching, inflammation, oozing, and in severe cases a burning sensation. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that there are up to 50 million cases of urushiol-induced dermatitis annually in the United States alone, accounting for 10% of all lost-time injuries in the United States Forest Service. Poison oak is a significant problem in the rural western and southern U.S., while poison-ivy is most rampant in the eastern U.S. Dermatitis from poison sumac is less common, but just The reaction caused by poison ivy, urushiol-induced contact dermatitis, is an allergic reaction. Around 15% to 30% of people have no allergic response, but most if not all will become sensitized over time with repeated or more concentrated exposure to urushiol.
• For those who are affected by usushiol, it causes a very irritating rash. In extreme cases, corticosteroids can be needed to treat rashes and severe itching. The first symptom of contact is a severe itching of the skin that develops into reddish colored inflammation or non-colored bumps, and then blistering of the skin occurs. In severe cases, clear fluids ooze from open blistered sores. Once the urushiol poison has had contact with the skin, it is quickly bound to the skin. The poison can be washed off within a short time after contact, but once bound to the skin, it cannot be washed away.
• The oozing fluids released by itching blisters do not spread the poison. The appearance of a spreading rash indicates that some areas received more of the poison and reacted sooner than other areas. The blisters and oozing result from blood vessels that develop gaps and leak fluid through the skin; if the skin is cooled, the vessels constrict and leak less. If poison ivy is burned and the smoke then inhaled, this rash will appear on the lining of the lungs, causing extreme pain and possibly fatal respiratory difficulty. If poison ivy is eaten, the digestive tract, airway, kidneys or other organs can be damaged.
  Urushiol oil can remain active for several years, so handling dead leaves or vines can cause a reaction. In addition, oil transferred from the plant to other objects (such as pet fur) can cause the rash if it comes into contact with the skin.

Poison Ivy Treatment

Primary treatment involves washing exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Soap is necessary as urushiol is a hydrophobic (oily) substance and is not washed off by plain water. Once an outbreak has occurred, cold compresses, Burow’s solution, calamine lotion, antihistamines, and hydrocortisone ointment are commonly used to abate the symptoms.

No vaccine has been developed to counter urushiol symptoms, so “cures” are generally held to be those products that physically remove the urushiol. After about 15 minutes of exposure, the urushiol is chemically bonded to the skin and can only be removed with pharmaceutical products, which vary by person in effectiveness. Two of these products, which are both over the counter drugs in the United States, are:

• Tecnu: Originally developed early in the Cold War as a treatment for radiation exposure, it was discovered later that Tecnu provided some relief for poison ivy exposure. It is a milky liquid and the main active ingredient is octylphenoxy-polyethoxyethanol. The four octyl groups of this chemical are too large to surround the non-polar molecules in the urushiol, which remains partially active and requires multiple applications. Also, the chemical makeup of the product requires that it be applied no later than eight hours after exposure to urushiol.
• Zanfel: Developed in 1999, this paste uses an ethoxylate molecule with the large octyl groups removed. This allows the molecule to “wrap” around the non-polar molecules of the urushiol and inactivate it. The other ingredient, sodium lauryl sarcosinate, allows the ethoxylate to form a micelle around the urushiol molecule. This creates a large molecule that contains flexible non-polar groups and soluble polar groups, allowing it to be rinsed away with water. Unlike Tecnu, Zanfel is effective many days after exposure, but it is a much more expensive product.
• Tecnu Extreme: Developed in 2005, this is also a paste with surfactants and micro-fine scrubbing particles to break the bond the urushiol has with the proteins in the skin, so the urushiol can be rinsed away with water. The product contains an active ingredient, grindelia robusta, for itch relief. It is most helpful if a rash has already started, but it can also be used to remove urushiol after exposure–before the rash has broken out.
• In cases of extreme symptoms, steroids such as cortisone are sometimes administered to attenuate the immune response. If bacterial secondary infection of affected areas occurs, antibiotics may also be necessary.
• There are many myths that deal with treating toxicodendrons such as poison ivy. Most have been discredited, but persist despite their falsehood.
• The fluid from the resulting blisters does not spread poison ivy to others.
• Poison ivy is not harmless when the leaves have fallen off as the toxic resin is very persistent.
• Ice, water, soap, lotions, dry cold air, do not help cure poison ivy rashes, they only sooth the itch.
• Urinating on the affected areas has no effect

Managing Anger: Expressing feelings of anger is important and healthy - it just needs to be handled the right way. If you don’t think you can express your feelings appropriately, it might help to go for a walk, work out at the gym, play ball, or talk with a friend.
